The Institute of Company Secretaries of India-Northern India Regional Council jointly with Surana & Surana International Attorneys, Chennai is organizing the 8^th All India Moot Court Competition-2010 on 6^th ,7^th and 8^th August, 2010 at New Delhi

RULES AND REGULATIONS

   I. Introduction

      Moot courts or mock trials are usually based on hypothetical cases involving emerging or unsettled areas of law.
II. Aim and Purpose

a.       To expose students pursuing the Company Secretaries Course to the nuances of court system in India to hone advocacy skills and putting them on the road to becoming a true professional
b.       To provide a real-life experience cum training in doing cutting-edge research, presenting ground breaking arguments (oral and written) and contributing to the development of jurisprudence in the concerned area of laws.
III. Subject, Venue and Date

The ICSI – 8^th All India Moot Court Competition 2010 will have a single All India National Round. The subject will be issues in the area of Corporate / Company affairs / Taxation, including the functioning of regulatory bodies / authorities as applicable to the issues. This year’s competition will be organized and hosted by NIRC at New Delhi from 6 – 8 August 2010.

The case and rules for the competition will be available at the Regional Offices and can be downloaded from the website of ICSI, www.icsi.edu & also at www.mootsite.com

Session on Public Issues !

We are glad to present the report of the Week‘s Study Circle Program organised by SICSSA @ SIRO on 27th March, 2010.

Mr.N.Subramanian,Company Secretary & a faculty of Bright Academy dealt the session.

Around 50 students attended the program which was based on Public Issues.
Mr.Subramanian commenced his session after thanking SICSSA for the initiative on the Weekly Study Circle program & for also inviting him to take up the session on Public Issues.

Mr.Subramanian started off by shooting out some general questions on Public Issues ,IPO etc before he explained the technical aspects of the topic.Later , he discussed about the fund raising avenues of a company in Public Issues & went on to explain the Regulatory framework of Capital Market.

Further,he explained the Legal Aspects involved in Public Issues & also the Procedural Aspects of IPO . The session was highly interactive & the faculty gave many practical examples to explain the intricacies of the subject. From IPO to Promoters Lock In Period , every aspect of Public Issues were covered .Finally ,Mr.Subramanian spoke about Fast track issues & ended the session .

On behalf of SICSSA & ICSI-SIRO ,Mr.Siddharth ( Member-SICSSA ) thanked Mr.Subramanian for creating a lively atmosphere while elaborating the concepts to the students & for also making it up for the Invite.

Session on India Constitution & Service Tax

We have immense delectation in presenting the report of the week‘s interactive program organised by SICSSA @ SIRO on 20th March, 2010.

Mr. R. Rajaram, Faculty ICSI-SIRC and an associate member of ICWAI, dealt the session.

Around 45 students attended the program, based on Constitution & Service Tax. Mr. Rajaram got a brief of what SICSSA is all about and expressed his happiness in addressing the students @ a fine IPL evening! He commenced the session by posting few general questions to the students about the profession.

Later, he shared his work experience where in he has dealt with Constitution & Service tax. The Practical aspects explained on the subject evoked the thoughts of many students who were present. He further urged the students to break the conventional thought of Company Secretaries being mere Company Law Practitioners & asked to diversify themselves into different areas like tax laws, labour laws & FEMA, post qualification.

Mr.Rajaram spoke about his interest in the Constitutional laws, which made him to take it up as his profession. He started the session by explaining the basics of Constitution, Fundamental Rights and Writs after which, the ordinance making powers and legislative powers of Union & State were discussed. The examples that he sited for the doctrine of Repugnancy, Colourable Legislation and Rule of Harmonius Construction made the concepts feel lighter.

In Service tax, Mr.Rajaram gave a background of the act, Scope, Validity, rate & computation of tax and briefed about the procedural aspects involved in computation of service tax.

The final few minutes of the session were used to brush up the students on the areas that were covered and were also used for clarification of doubts.

Mr.Rajaram’s thoughts on the Profession gave an idea to the students in Framing their Professional future. “To raise the quality of the Profession, one has to take interest in different areas and should compete with different professionals” was the ultimate motto of Mr. Rajaram, which he induced the students to hold the same in their Career.

6th March 2010 Event Report !

We are glad to share the report of the Program organized by SICSSA on 6th March 2010.

The Year's first Study Circle program @ SIRO,organized by SICSSA was based on FEMA & LLP.

Mr.K.Ramesh, a leading Corporate Lawyer in Chennai & an expert in Foreign Exchange Management act took over the session on FEMA.The students present, listened to his presentation with rapt attention . Mr.Ramesh explained the overview of FEMA & its various implications.The presentation on FEMA went on for about 45 minutes which was extended to an hour with the query session towards the end.

Presentation on FEMA was followed by a presentation on LLP (Limited liability partnership). This was taken over by Mr.Sanjay Bangani , Executive student of ICSI-SIRC & SICSSA Team member.He explained the various aspects in formation of an LLP & its other procedural aspects.He further spoke about the boom for Professionals with the introduction of LLP . Finally,SICSSA Team head had words of appreciation for Sanjay & urged other students to come forward with such presentations in future .

March 2010 Event Update - Extempore Competition!

Hello Friends ,

We are delighted to present the report of the 3rd event of the Year conducted by SICSSA @ SIRO-Chennai !...The report of the first two has not been published in our Blog due to some unforeseen reasons .

Our 3rd event was a General Extempore on different topics ranging from Company Law to various general issues like Inflation. The event went on for two sessions ,i.e Morning & Evening which was conducted exclusively for the students of foundation programme .

Around 40 students grouped into 10 teams took part in the Morning session !.. Team 6 ( Vivek,Praful ,Naresh & Nitesh ) were declared as the Winners of the Extempore/Debate competition. In the second position was Team 2 ( Chandramouli,Ashwin,Arvind & Kaushik ) .The third position was shared by Team 4 (Prasanna,Shakil, Hari ,Balaji & Karthick ) & Team 9 (R.Varalakshmi,Nivedita, Karpagam & Supriya).

In the evening around 24 students grouped in 8 teams took part in the event !.. Due to Inadequate participation & lack of team work , Event winners couldn't be declared. !! However Ms.Anita Katticaren of Team 6 was declared the Best Speaker of the Day along with Chandramouli of Morning batch.

Seminar on ‘ADVANTAGE CS – NEW VISTAS’

The Southern India Regional Council of the ICSI is conducting a Seminar on ‘ADVANTAGE CS – NEW VISTAS’ on Friday, 26^th February 2010 at ‘Majestic Hall’, Hotel Deccan Plaza, 36 Royapettah High Road, Chennai – 600 014. The Students of the ICSI can participate in the seminar for availing ADP credit hours. The students attending the above seminar will be awarded 8 [EIGHT] CREDIT HOURS which is equivalent to attending one Academic Development Program. The fee for the programme is Rs.500/- [Rupees five hundred only].

Since the registration for the above Seminar would be made on First-cum-first served basis, students are advised to register their name at the earliest. The delegate fee can be remitted by way of cash or demand draft favouring “SIRC OF THE ICSI” payable at Chennai.

Business & Corporate Laws Quiz !

SICSSA on 08.02.2010 organized an interactive quiz program on Business & Corporate Laws . The Quiz was hosted by SICSSA Team Head, Mr Umashankar & Member , Miss. Neha Agarwal. Around 50 students took part in the event that was conducted exclusively for the Foundation Students at the SIRO of ICSI .The students took who took part showcased great enthusiasm & good spirits.

Students were split into 3 Members team which saw around 16 teams for the Event .They were asked to answer the questions which were displayed as a Ppt presentation.The performance in the quiz was quite encouraging which helped the students to expose themselves, more in the field of Corporate laws & business.

Report & Pictures of the 5th SIRC-Students Conference ~

Hello Friends ,

With immense delectation, we present before you the report of the 5th SIRC-Students Conference held @ Hotel Savera,Chennai on 10th Dec 2009.

This marks the first Conference in C.S History of being hosted completely by Students.

Around 325 students from Chennai,Karnataka & Kerala attended the Conference.

The theme of the Conference was : SICSSA-Samaavesh -"Fast forward to future"

The conference began at 10.30 AM & ended @ around 6.00 PM.
Honourable Chairman of SIRC-ICSI,Mr.Gopalakrishna Hegde, Council Member, Mr.Sridharan, Chairman,Students facilities Committee, Mr.Puttaparathi Jagannatham ,Joint Director ,Mrs.Sarah Arokiaswamy & other dignitaries of ICSI were present for the Conference.

The Chief Guest was Dr.Narasimhan ,Principal of D.G.G.Vaishnav College & the Guest of Honour was Mr.K.Ravi ,Partner ,BMR Advisors.

All the events were organized & conducted by students of SIRC-ICSI,Chennai.
After the inaugural session,Mr.Arvind Rajeevsarathy(Student ICSI-SIRC) hosted the Business Quiz,followed by a semi-classical dance by Miss.Rajalakshmi.

Post tea,technical session on Latest Amendments on Corporate Laws was presented by Miss.Soundhraya & Miss.Anusha.(Students of ICSI-SIRC)
Then a small introduction on Stock Wars (a game based on ancient floor trading) was given by Mr.Raju Iyer ( Faculty ICSI-SIRC & Regional Council Member of SIRC- ICWAI)

Stock Wars began soon after the lunch which went on for almost an hour and half.This was followed by a presentation on the "Role of Independent Directors" by Mr.Ramanujam,a student of ICSI-SIRC. Around 35 teams took part in the Stock wars which was played with great spirit & enthusiasm.

After the Stock Wars,Mr.Ananthakrishnan & his band -" Zinx" performed a fusion concert for the evening.The students enjoyed the sizzling performance of the band & asked for more!

Mr.Vignesh Krishnan,(Student of ICSI-SIRC & Head of SICSSA) briefed about SICSSA & its functioning .He further spoke about the team work which made this Conference happen & thanked Chairman Shri.Gopalakrishna Hegde for his valuable support & encouragement.Then a short film on the formation & achievements of SICSSA was screened.The audience applauded for the great work done by the Team.

Next,the final technical session on, "Trading on Carbon Compounds" was presented by Mr.Eric ferror Noronha.Last but not the least ,the Valedictory function followed.

Honourable Chairman,Mr.Gopalakrishna Hegde after giving away the prizes for the winners of various events, lavished praises on students for their active participation & praised team SICSSA for the commendable effort taken to organize the whole event & make it a grand success.He further urged the students to keep this ongoing spirit & continue the same even in future.

Report on Corporate Quiz ~

SICSSA conducted its second event on 7th August 2009, i.e the General & Corporate Quiz at SIRC of ICSI ,Chennai.The Quiz was Hosted by Mr.Umashankar ,Mr. Aravind & Mr. Vignesh Krishnan .

8 Teams consisting of 3 in a team (Executive Programme Students) Participated in the Quiz which had 5 rounds .They were:~

Round 1:Company law

Round 2:Current affairs

Round 3:Name the famous Personalities

Round 4:Expand the Brand Names

Round 5:Figure out the Logos

Mr.Ajay ,Mr.Murlidhraran & Mr.Karthikeyan of Team No:3 were the Proud Winners of the Quiz.The Runners Up were Mr.Prashanth,Mr.Chandramohan & Mr.Santosh Kumar of Team No:7.Two teams shared the third position,i.e Team No:8(Mr.M Shridar,Mr.Aravind & Mr.S.Shyam) & Team No:4 (P.Balakesavalu,Mrs.Priyamvatha & Mr.Senthil Kumar).

Nearly 50 Students from Executive Programme witnessed the quiz with great fun and enthusiasm .

Report on "Pick & Speak" Competition !

Hello Friends

We are happy to inform you that SICSSA launched its first event on 10.07.2009 (Friday). The event titled, “PICK & SPEAK” was extempore group elocution. Participants were grouped into teams consisting of 3 members each. The teams were asked to pick lots and speak on the topic chosen by them for three minutes. A minimum of two participants from each team were required to speak on the dais. The topics were based on some issues requiring concern in the present business scenario.

The event began at 6.15 P.M with 24 participants divided into 8 teams, all of them being students of the Executive Programme. The students spoke with great enthusiasm. The various topics chosen were: ~

Team 1: Advent of Corporate Business giants into retail market – Impact on Small

Vendors.

Team 2: Advertisements – Everywhere, (for) Everything, (by) Everyone.

Team 3: What is actually required in India to make it a Developed Country?

Team 4: Outward Luxurious Life of IT Professionals.

Team 5: Younger Generation into Indian Politics.

Team 6: Role of MNCs in India.

Team 7: Business Ethics – Morality and Social Responsibilities.

Team 8: Government in business – Aimed at Society’s Benefit.

The event was judged by Mr. L.V Shyam Sundar, Faculty, ICSI-SIRC. In his concluding speech, he gave the participants a few tips to improve their oratorical skills and urged them to take part in such programs in future. Ms. Kavitha, Mr. Srinivasan and Ms. Nithya (Team No.2) were the proud winners for the “BEST TEAM” of the “PICK and SPEAK” competition. Ms. Archana Dheer (Team No. 3) & Mr.Shankaram (Team No: 8) were declared the “BEST SPEAKERS” of the day.

We are very much happy to share with you this good news, that SICSSA has been successfully inaugurated on Saturday, 4th of April 2009 here at sirc-icsi house in the presence of Shri.Gopalkrishna Hegde, our Beloved Chairmen-SIRC of ICSI, Smt. Laksmi Subramanian, Vice Chairperson – SIRC, Shri. P.Jaganathan Chairman- Oral Coaching & Students Facility Committee SIRC, Smt. Sarah Arokiaswamy, Deputy Director SIRC, Shri. Sridharan -Central Council Member & Shri. Diraviam, Member ICSI-SIRC.

Program commenced with a soothing invocation song by Mr. Ananthakrishnan, followed by the welcome address by Ms. Shri Rajeswari. Then a classical dance (Radha kaise na jale) portraying the theme –"true love",was performed by Ms. Rajalakshmi.

This was followed by the installation of Office Bearers of SICSSA by Shri. Gopalkrishna Hegde.

After the installation of office bearers, Ms. Varshini read out a thought evoking poem,which was followed by a Carnatic group song by members of Academia & a solo song by Ms.Jayashree.

Ms.Pooja staged a power point presentation explaining about the activities of SICSSA along with the official logo presentation by Mr.Arjun .

To add colour to the function, an Interactive Business quiz for the audience was conducted by Mr. Vignesh Krishnan & Ms. Rajashri.The Quiz was a total delight for the audience as everybody participated with great fun and enthusiasm .

Next was a Cinematic Dance by Ms.Bavneet and Ms.Namitha which was greatly appreciated and enjoyed.

To end the splendid evening, Chairman gave a concluding speech encouraging the students of the SIRC-ICSI and SICSSA members in particular to take on the activities of the students’ body of the institute seriously and form a thick link between students and the Institute.

He also encouraged the students to work as a team and actively participate in moot court,company law quiz ,elocution and other intellectual competitions and make the whole process of Professional development an interactive and participative process.

He urged the students to put aside their differences and work as a team for the betterment of themselves as well as to take the Institute of Company Secretaries to greater heights in terms of intellectual and corporate development.

He also added how to control anger and approach towards success with self control.

Ms. Sangeetha thanked the gathering and the dignitaries who were part of the wonderful evening. Finally the show ended with the National Anthem.

Report On Crash Course on Tax Laws ~

SIRC of ICSI conducted a crash course on tax laws for executive programme students as a preparatory tool for June 2009 Examinations. The two days C.C was held on the 25^th and 26^th of April 2009, in the SIRC premises .It was conducted by Mr.Gopal Krishna Raju. Mr.Gopal Krishna Raju is an associate member of 'Institute of Company Secretaries of India’,'Institute of Chartered Accountants of India' & 'Institute of Cost and Works Accountants of India' .He is a practicing Charted Accountant by profession and a visiting faculty at ICSI & ICAI.

About thirty students attended the two day programme on Tax Laws. It was totally examination oriented, to help students prepare for the June 2009 examinations with confidence. Tax laws being a very vast area need a lot of help and guidance. The two day program covered all the major areas of tax namely Income Tax, Wealth Tax and Direct & Indirect taxes. Extensive material based on past examination papers incorporating the latest amendments was provided along with another material incorporating all the latest amendments (Amendments made in the Finance Act 2008) was also given to the students . Many provisions and amendments were discussed in the class which was highly interactive. Students got their doubts clarified from Mr.G.K Raju, who was very much student friendly and encouraging in nature. The students feedback was extremely positive. They thanked the Institute and the faculty whole heartedly and requested that such courses be conducted more frequently for all subjects. We on behalf of SICSSA would like to thank ICSI-SIRC and Raju sir for the wonderful program and also thank the students who participated for making it a grand success.

We have Pleasure in informing you that, SIRC of the ICSI is organizing model examination for June 2009 examinations for Foundation, Executive and Professional Programme from May 4, 2009 to May 11, 2009 at SIRC of the ICSI, No.9, Wheat Crofts Road, Nungambakkam, Chennai – 600 034. The Model Examination will be an exercise to the students to confidently face the Institute’s main examination and also to have a model of what is expected from the students in the Institute’s examination. The course would be highly focused to deal with the subject strictly from the examination point of view.

Methodology:

The course will be a combination of lecture and class room exercise, so as to give the students required level of confidence to face the examination boldly.

Faculty:

The entire course would be conducted by Shri Gopal Krishna Raju, ACS, FCA, AICWA, PG Dip.in OR & FM.

Fee:

The Foreign Exchange Management Act (1999) or in short FEMA has been introduced as a replacement for earlier Foreign Exchange Regulation Act (FERA). FEMA came into act on the 1st June, 2000.

The main objective behind the Foreign Exchange Management Act (1999) is to consolidate and amend the law relating to foreign exchange, with objective of facilitating external trade and payments and for promoting the orderly development and maintenance of foreign exchange market in India.

FEMA is applicable to the all parts of India. The act is also applicable to all branches, offices and agencies outside India owned or controlled by a person who is resident of India.

FEMA - A Simplified Approach

Hope most of you would have attended the Students Meeting held @ SIRC regional office on 28th Feb 2009.

With Immense pleasure ,we would like to share ,with all the students of ICSI-SIRC,especially the students who could not attend the program;that SICSSA representatives ,got a chance to host the complete students program.

After the Welcome Address, Our Beloved Chairman SIRC Shri.Gopalkrishna Hegde addressed the gathering.He urged the students to take part actively in all the programs of SICSSA and briefed out the importance of forming the students association.

After the Chairman's speech,Secretary & CEO of ICSI spoke.His highly inspiring speech was filled with words of appreciation and encouragement for taking efforts in formation of a students association in a very short span of time..He also stressed on the unique motto of SICSSA,i.e Learn,Leap & Lead .

Next,Vice President Of ICSI Shri.Vinayak.S.Khanvalkar addressed the students.He exhorted the students to utilize all the unique facilities available in the institute(SIRC ,Chennai).Shri.Khanvalkar spoke about specialisation in various fields like Labour law,Securities law,Taxation etc apart from Company Law.He urged the students to expand and diversify into various fields in order to compete in the growing corporate world.
